Trans Fat, the controversial oil that has had a huge impact on our nation since the popularity of it in fast foods. I find it amazing how many people are still not very informed on what it is, its side effects, how greatly it affects our health and our future, not only as a nation, but as the world.

Trans Fat (trans, which means “across” in Latin), also known as hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil is found in thousands if not millions of food products today, it has swept the world from restaurants to supermarket shelves. Yet little is still known by a vast majority of consumers. What exactly is trans fat? Why would the companies that make my favorite food use this oil? Is it dangerous? How do I know if my food has it? These are some of the many questions I am going to attempt to cover, and hopefully give you, the reader, a better understanding and awareness about trans fat.

To give you a brief history on Trans Fat, it was developed in 1901 by a German chemist known as Wilhelm Normann. Little did this man know the effect it would have on the human race today. Normann patented the process of hydrogenation, started a business from it, and commenced production in 1909. A fairly larger company at the time known as Procter & Gamble acquired the rights to the Patent and as 1911 came around they began marketing the first hydrogenated shortening, known today as Crisco.

As time progressed, so did the food industry, fast food started booming and awareness of saturated fats came in to place. An organization called CSPI (The Center for Science in the Public Interest) had a campaign against the use of the ever so popular saturated fats for fast food cooking. In response to the campaign, fast food companies responded by replacing the saturated fatty oil with trans fatty oil. It wasn’t till the 1980’s would we see the popularity of hydrogenated oils in our food. The real kicker is that we never did see it in our food, no one knew what it was, and no one saw it in the ingredients.

And the rest of California, anyone living here knows this already, but anyway, very interesting it is. Today at school the air quality was terrible, so bad they shut down the school around 2pm today. Anyway, I took some photos the other night, I didn’t have a tripod so forgive me for the quality here. Anyway, hope everyone is safe :)

Might I add, if you see any advertisements on stevo.org (text based, so yes, you might have to look for them), please click on them!
